Family Phinisi Tours in Komodo: Ages, Safety & Cabins

Realistic minimum ages for every Komodo activity, and which cabins actually work when children are aboard.

Short answer. Komodo works well with children from around five upward on a private phinisi. Snorkelling has no formal minimum age, PADI sets scuba entry at 8 for Bubblemaker and 10 for Junior Open Water, and the Padar and ranger treks are the two activities that genuinely need stamina. Family cabins run USD 300–400 per person; no separate child park fee is published.

FAQ

Questions People Actually Ask

What is the minimum age for a Komodo phinisi trip?

There is no formal minimum for the cruise itself. In practice Komodo works well from about age five, when a child can snorkel in a sheltered bay with an adult and manage a short walk ashore.

Can children see the Komodo dragons?

Yes, on the ranger-guided trek at Komodo Island or Rinca. Rangers escort every group and set the rules; take the short route and keep children hand-held and inside the group.

Can children snorkel at Manta Point?

Only strong swimmers, realistically from about ten. Karang Makassar is a drift site in 8 to 18 m with light to moderate current. Manjarite, Siaba and Kanawa are calmer alternatives.

What age can a child start diving in Komodo?

PADI sets Bubblemaker at eight years old in shallow water, and Junior Open Water certification at ten with depth limits. The boat needs an instructor-led dive programme aboard for either.

Is the Padar hike suitable for children?

From about six or seven with a parent, more comfortably from ten. It's a stepped climb in the dark before sunrise with no shade at the top — stopping at the first viewpoint is a perfectly good outcome.

What does a family cabin cost?

Published family cabins run USD 300 per person on Ahsana Liveaboard, USD 330 for a family balcony on Sundari and USD 400 on Magika Liveaboard. A whole-boat family charter starts around USD 4,200 per night.
