When Is the Best Time to Sail a Phinisi in Komodo?

Short answer. April to June and September to November are the best windows for a phinisi: calmest water, best visibility, shoulder pricing. July and August are peak season with good visibility but real wind in the open straits. December to March is the monsoon — roughest seas, some boats in refit, and the peak of manta season.

A phinisi is a wooden sailing hull with a deep, heavy displacement shape. It rides differently from a steel liveaboard and very differently from a speedboat, and that changes which months are genuinely pleasant on board. The question is not only “when is the weather good” but “when is the weather good for this kind of boat“.

What does each season actually feel like on board?

PeriodSea state and visibilityWhat it means for a phinisiPricing
April–JuneCalmest water of the year, visibility at its bestNight anchorages are flat. Deck dining works every evening. The easiest introduction to a wooden hull.Shoulder
July–AugustGood visibility, but real wind through the open straits and around PadarCrossings get lively; the boat rolls at anchor on exposed nights. Fine if you have sea legs.Peak — highest of the year
September–NovemberCalm returns, visibility excellentArguably the best combination on the calendar: quiet water, fewer boats than August, shoulder rates.Shoulder
December–MarchMonsoon. Roughest seas of the year; some boats go to maintenanceItineraries get cut or rerouted. Southern sites are often unreachable. This is also when manta density peaks.Low, with cancellation risk

Season pattern compiled from Labuan Bajo operator scheduling and regional dive-condition reporting. Weather is weather — a calm week in February and a rough week in May both happen.

Why do some phinisi disappear between December and March?

Because wood needs a slipway. The maintenance window for the Labuan Bajo fleet clusters around May to July for planned dry dock, but monsoon months are when boats with deferred work take themselves out of service rather than fight a rough sea with a tired hull. If a boat you want is unavailable in January, that is often the reason, and it is a good sign rather than a bad one. The maintenance side of that is covered in detail on the refit cycle page.

When is manta season, and does it override everything?

Mantas are in Komodo all year at Karang Makassar, which is the drift most 3D2N itineraries run. Density peaks December to March, when plankton-rich water pushes through, and Manta Alley in the south has reported 20 to 50-plus animals on a good day in that window. So the honest framing is: December to March is not “low season”, it is manta season with rough transits.

If mantas are the reason for the trip, that trade is worth taking — on a bigger hull, with a flexible itinerary and travel insurance. If the trip is a honeymoon or a first sail with children, take April to June instead.

What about water temperature?

AreaNovember–AprilMay–OctoberVisibility
North and central park (Karang Makassar, Batu Bolong, Siaba, Tatawa)27–29 °C26–28 °C15–30 m
South (Manta Alley and the Indian Ocean side)23–26 °C shoulder21–25 °C at the peak of the Jun–Sep upwelling10–20 m, sharp thermocline

The southern upwelling is the reason experienced divers carry a 5 mm suit in Komodo even though the north feels tropical. Snorkellers on a standard 3D2N stay north and rarely feel it.

Which month should you pick if you only get one week?

May, September or October. You get flat night anchorages, the full route without weather substitutions, visibility that makes Taka Makassar look like a postcard, and rates below the July–August band. Padar at sunrise in early October is the version of Komodo people think they are booking when they book July.

If your dates are fixed by school holidays and land in July or August, it is still a good trip — just choose a longer, heavier hull, expect motion on the Kalong-to-Padar leg overnight, and read the honest 3D2N breakdown before you set expectations about sailing under canvas.

What happens when the weather rewrites your itinerary?

It happens more often than brochures admit, and almost always in the monsoon months. The captain does not cancel a day; he substitutes. Southern sites go first because they are exposed to the Indian Ocean swell, and the boat trades them for sheltered northern water — Siaba instead of Manta Alley, Sebayur instead of a southern crossing. Padar and the dragon islands are rarely lost, because both sit inside relatively protected approaches.

What you should establish before you pay a deposit is who carries the cost of that. Three questions, all fair, all answerable in writing:

  • Who decides? It should be the captain, on the day, on safety grounds — not an office, and not the loudest guest on board.
  • What is the substitution policy? A rerouted itinerary is normal. A shortened one — leaving a day early, returning to Labuan Bajo mid-trip — is a different matter and should have a stated remedy.
  • What happens if the boat never sails? Harbourmaster closures do occur in heavy weather. Refund, credit or reschedule should be written down rather than discussed after the fact.

Two practical hedges. Travel insurance that explicitly covers boat trips and weather disruption, bought when you book rather than the week before you fly. And, in December to March, a four-night itinerary instead of a two-night one: a longer trip absorbs a lost day, whereas losing day two of a 3D2N removes Padar, the dragons and the manta drift in a single stroke.

Questions people actually ask

What is the worst month to sail in Komodo?
January and February, typically. Monsoon winds are at their strongest, the southern sites are frequently unreachable, and itinerary changes or cancellations are common. Boats still run, but plan for substitutions.
Can a phinisi sail in the rainy season?
Yes, and many do. A heavy wooden hull handles chop better than a small speedboat. What changes is route flexibility: expect the captain to swap southern stops for sheltered northern anchorages without notice.
Is July too crowded?
Padar at sunrise in July has queues on the ridge and a line of boats in the bay. The wildlife and the water are unaffected; the photographs and the peace are. September delivers the same conditions with a fraction of the traffic.
When is the cheapest time to sail?
December to March, the monsoon window. You are trading sea state and itinerary certainty for price, and gaining the best manta density of the year in exchange.
Do the dragons behave differently by season?
Ranger-led trekking runs year round. Dragons are less active in the hottest part of the day whatever the month, which is why treks are scheduled early morning or late afternoon regardless of season.
How far ahead do peak-season boats sell out?
The good hulls in July and August are typically committed several months out, and whole-boat charter for those weeks goes earliest. If your dates are fixed to a school holiday, treat the boat as the first booking, not the last.
