Why arrive the day before?
Because the boarding window is 09:00 to 10:30 on day one, and a same-morning flight from Bali leaves no margin at all. One delayed departure, one weather hold, and the boat sails without you — it cannot wait, because the ranger slots and the anchorage schedule downstream are fixed. The night before also solves the small things: rupiah in cash from a town ATM (there are none inside the park), a last proper shower, and a real dinner before three days of boat food.

When should you book the flight home?
Late afternoon on the final day. A 3D2N is normally alongside in Labuan Bajo around midday, and you still need disembarkation, the transfer and check-in. A lunchtime flight is a gamble; an early-afternoon flight is tight; anything from about 15:00 is comfortable. If your onward connection is international, sleep in Bali that night rather than sprinting for a long-haul the same evening.
Is airport transfer included?
On the charter fleet, hotel or airport pick-up on the morning of departure is normally part of the package, and drop-off on the last day with it. It is not universal in the open-trip market, so confirm it when you book and give your flight number so the driver is not guessing. What should you sort out before you leave home?
Three things. Check whether your nationality needs a visa or can use visa on arrival, close to travel rather than months ahead, because Indonesian rules move. Take out travel insurance that covers boat trips and, if you dive, diving. And tell people at home you will be largely offline: there is usable signal near Labuan Bajo and around some anchorages, and none at all in the middle of the park.
What is worth doing the night before?
The pre-cruise night exists to absorb flight risk, but it is not wasted time. Labuan Bajo has changed enormously since the airport was upgraded, and the practical checklist for the evening is short.
- Draw cash. ATMs are in town, not in the park. Park entry, gratuities and anything ashore are rupiah. Budget IDR 2–4 million per person for a 3D2N and draw it in one trip.
- Buy anything you forgot. Reef-safe sunscreen, motion-sickness tablets, a head torch for the Padar climb and a dry bag are all available in town and none of them are on the boat.
- Eat ashore. The hill restaurants above the harbour look west over the bay, which is the one sunset you will see from land all trip.
- Confirm pick-up. Give the operator your hotel name and room, not just your flight number. Boarding is 09:00–10:30 and drivers start early.
One more thing, easy to forget in the rush: repack. You want a soft bag that stows flat under a berth, everything you need for three days inside it, and the hard case left with the hotel or the operator. Cabins on a phinisi are beautifully joined and genuinely small, and the first ten minutes on board are much better spent on deck than wrestling a suitcase into a space it was never going to fit.
