What Does the Komodo Phinisi Calendar Look Like Month by Month in 2027?

Short answer. Best all-round months for 2027: May, September and October — calm water, excellent visibility, shoulder pricing, light traffic. July and August are peak: good visibility, real wind, highest rates, busiest ridge. December to March is monsoon and peak manta, with the highest chance of itinerary changes.

One table, twelve rows, so you can put your available weeks against what the sea is actually doing. Everything here is a seasonal pattern rather than a forecast — Komodo produces flat weeks in February and lumpy ones in May.

Seasonal pattern compiled from Labuan Bajo operating conditions and regional dive-condition reporting. Weather is weather: treat this as probability, not a schedule.

Where the fleet is in the calendar

Boats are not available uniformly through the year, for reasons that have nothing to do with demand. Planned dry dock for the Labuan Bajo timber fleet clusters around May to July: hull cleaning happens roughly annually and antifouling roughly every three years, so a given boat disappears for a window at some point in that band. Monsoon months are when boats with deferred work take themselves out rather than fight a rough sea.

Practical implication: if a specific named hull is the point of your trip, ask about its maintenance schedule before you fix dates. The reasoning is on the refit cycle page, and what each hull offers is in the 2027 comparison table.

The three trips people are usually planning

Matching months to trip types from operating conditions and route access. School-holiday constraints override all of this for most families, which is why July and August remain the busiest months in the park.

What about the holiday windows?

Christmas and New Year is a genuine anomaly: monsoon conditions with peak-season demand, because the calendar forces it. If those are your dates, book early, take a bigger hull, and hold expectations about the itinerary loosely. Indonesian public holidays and the Idul Fitri period also create domestic demand spikes that move year to year — worth checking against your dates when you plan 2027.

The short version

If you can choose freely: September or October. Flat water, gold hills, clear reefs, shoulder rates and a Padar ridge you can have to yourself at dawn. If you cannot choose freely, every month in Komodo produces a good trip — the variable is how much the weather gets to rewrite it, and how much you paid for the privilege.

How do Indonesian holidays shape the year?

The weather sets the sea state; domestic holidays set how many boats are in a bay. Foreign visitors plan around July and August and are then surprised by a busy week in an otherwise quiet month, which is almost always an Indonesian holiday period.

Three patterns matter for 2027 planning. Idul Fitri moves roughly eleven days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar and produces the largest domestic travel surge of the year, with a week of heavy demand either side. Indonesian school holidays around mid-year fill Labuan Bajo with domestic groups. And Christmas to New Year is the anomaly noted elsewhere on this page: monsoon conditions carrying peak-season demand, because the calendar leaves no alternative.

Domestic visitors also pay a different park tariff — IDR 50,000 on a weekday and IDR 75,000 on a holiday or weekend under PP 36/2024, against IDR 250,000 for foreign visitors. That weekend differential is a small but real signal about which days are busiest at the ranger stations.

Practical advice: check your candidate 2027 dates against the Indonesian public-holiday calendar before you fix flights, because the dates move year to year and no article written in advance can list them reliably. If your dates land on a national holiday week, book earlier and expect company at Padar. The boat-by-boat availability picture is on the 2027 comparison table.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best month to visit Komodo in 2027?
September or October for the best combination of calm water, excellent visibility, shoulder pricing and light traffic. May is the other strong candidate and is often the calmest water of the year.
Is December a bad time to go?
It is monsoon, so transits are rougher and itineraries change more. It is also the start of peak manta season and the cheapest band outside the Christmas and New Year spike.
Why are some boats unavailable in June?
Planned maintenance. The Labuan Bajo timber fleet’s dry-dock window clusters around May to July, with hull cleaning roughly annual and antifouling roughly every three years.
When is peak season pricing?
July and August, plus the Christmas and New Year window. Everything from April to June and September to November sits in a shoulder band, and the monsoon months are the low band.
Are mantas really best in the rainy season?
Density peaks December to March, when plankton-rich water pushes through. They are resident year round at Karang Makassar, so the season changes your odds and the size of aggregations, not whether they exist.
How far ahead should I book for peak months?
Six to nine months for a whole boat in July, August or the New Year window; three to five months for a cabin. Shoulder months are comfortable at three to six months out.
