Short answer. Budget three layers, not one. The boat is the big number: cabins on a shared phinisi start around USD 300 per person per night and whole-boat charter runs USD 1,800 to USD 27,000 a night depending on the hull. On top sit park entry at IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor, flights, and roughly IDR 1–3 million of soft costs per person.
Almost every quote you will be shown in Labuan Bajo covers the boat and nothing else. That is not dishonesty, it is how the market prices itself, but it means the number in the brochure is rarely the number that leaves your account. This page rebuilds the whole stack from published figures so you can sanity-check any quote you receive for 2027.
What does the boat itself cost?
Two ways to buy a phinisi trip. You take a cabin on a boat that other people are also on, or you take the whole boat. The per-cabin route is priced per person per night; whole-boat charter is priced per night regardless of how many of you turn up. The crossover point is usually around eight to ten paying adults.
| How you buy it | Published 2027 figure | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin on a shared phinisi | from USD 300 per person per night (Ahsana); USD 310 Magika; USD 330 Sundari; up to USD 800 on Naturalia | You share saloon and deck with 8–20 strangers. Cheapest way onto a wooden hull. |
| Whole boat, small phinisi | from USD 1,800 per night | 2–4 cabins, roughly 5–10 guests. Splits to USD 180–360 per head. |
| Whole boat, mid fleet | roughly USD 3,600–9,000 per night | 5–8 cabins. The bracket most families and friend groups land in. |
| Whole boat, flagship | up to USD 27,000 per night; in rupiah the card runs IDR 52,750,000 (Thalassa 1) to IDR 142,000,000 (Sukha Sail 2) | 14 cabins, up to 30 guests, full crew, tenders and dive gear on board. |

How much is the national park, really?
This is where most budgets go wrong, because the internet is full of stale numbers. The legal tariff sits in PP 36/2024: IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit, and IDR 50,000 on a weekday or IDR 75,000 on a holiday for Indonesian visitors. Trekking, wildlife observation and snorkelling sit inside that foreign-visitor figure.
You will still see IDR 600,000, IDR 650,000 and IDR 900,000 quoted by operators. Those are bundles — the state tariff plus regional levies plus ranger and trail-management fees — not the park ticket. And the IDR 3,750,000 “conservation membership” that circulated in 2022 was cancelled. If a 2027 quote leans on that number, the source is out of date.
What do the flights add?
Nobody sails a phinisi without first landing at Komodo Airport (LBJ). Denpasar to Labuan Bajo is roughly one to one and a half hours non-stop; Jakarta is about two to two and a half. Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and the Lion Air Group serve the route, with frequency that moves by season.
| Leg | Flight time | One-way economy, 2026 observed range |
|---|---|---|
| Denpasar (DPS) → Labuan Bajo | ≈ 1–1.5 hours | IDR 600,000–900,000 on promo; IDR 900,000–1,500,000 normal |
| Jakarta (CGK) → Labuan Bajo | ≈ 2–2.5 hours | IDR 900,000–1,400,000 on promo; IDR 1,400,000–2,200,000 normal |
Fare ranges are what was observable in 2026, not a fixed tariff. Airlines repricing for peak July–August is normal and schedules change seasonally — check before you commit to boat dates.
What are the soft costs nobody quotes?
The last layer is small per line and meaningful in total. Budget it once and stop worrying about it.
| Item | Realistic 2027 allowance | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-cruise hotel night in Labuan Bajo | IDR 400,000–3,000,000 | Boarding is normally 09:00–10:30 on day one. Flying in the same morning is a bad plan. |
| Crew gratuity | IDR 300,000–1,000,000 per guest for a 3D2N | Discretionary, pooled. Cash, in rupiah. |
| Alcohol and premium drinks | IDR 500,000–2,000,000 | Soft drinks and water are normally included; wine and spirits usually are not. |
| Diving supplement | operator-dependent | Cabins are quoted snorkel-inclusive. Certified diving is a separate line, and some operators also collect a small per-day diver surcharge. |
| Drone permit | IDR 1,000,000 | A published figure inside the park area. If you fly a drone, budget it. |
| Cash buffer | IDR 1,000,000 | There is no ATM inside the park. Park fees, tips and anything ashore are cash. |
These are planning allowances drawn from operator practice and published permit figures, not a fixed price list. Ask for your own boat’s inclusions in writing.
What does that add up to?
Take a couple flying from Bali on a 3D2N in a shared deluxe cabin at USD 330 per person per night. Boat: about USD 1,320 for the pair. Park entry: IDR 500,000. Flights: IDR 2.4–6 million return for two. Soft costs: IDR 3–5 million. The trip lands somewhere between IDR 27 million and IDR 34 million all in, and the boat is roughly two thirds of it.
Now take eight friends on a whole-boat mid-fleet charter at USD 4,500 a night for two nights. Boat: USD 9,000, or USD 1,125 each. Everything else scales per head as above. The whole boat is not the extravagance people assume once the group is real — that arithmetic is laid out cabin by cabin on the 2027 rates page, and the boat-by-boat differences are in the luxury phinisi comparison table.
Where does the money genuinely differ between boats?
Three things move the price more than anything printed in a brochure. Cabin count against length — a 40 m hull with six cabins costs more per guest than a 40 m hull with ten, because you are buying space. Age since last refit, which decides whether the air conditioning survives a February night. And crew ratio, which is the difference between a boat with one cook and a boat with a chef, a dive guide and a deckhand who actually watches the tender.
None of that appears in a headline rate. It appears in the survey, which is why the honest way to compare two quotes is to compare inclusions line by line rather than the number on the front page.
